The Threats Lurking On The Dark Web
The internet itself started out as a private network before becoming publicly available. In that sense, the history of the Deep Web is as old as the history of the internet. But if we focus solely on the Dark Web, stats show its history dates back to 2000, when Ian Clarke released Freenet, his thesis project. A student at the University of Edinburgh, Clarke aimed to create a system of data storage and retrieval that would be decentralized, thus allowing for anonymous file sharing and communication. Only two years later, his thesis project would serve as the basis for the Tor Project, a non-profit group that launched the anonymous Tor browser in 2008.

Following the seizure and sanctioning of the $5 billion dark web market Hydra in April 2022, numerous rival Russian-speaking markets have been competing for its customers and vendors. Solaris – which emerged as one of Hydra’s biggest successors – processed approximately $150 million in sales of drugs and other illicit how to buy drugs on the darknet goods and services in its short lifespan. The anonymity of onion sites is the main draw of the dark web, and most dark web links are hosted on “.onion” domains due to the sensitive nature of the businesses or services they host. Onion sites may offer secure access to cryptocurrency wallets or anonymous email clients.
Buyers simultaneously active on multiple markets also play the role of connectors in the ecosystem. Therefore, we analyse the temporal network where nodes are the active markets and an edge between the nodes represents the number of multibuyers between them, what we henceforth call the multibuyer network. The structural change seen in the multiseller network is not observed in the multibuyer network, as show in Fig. The evolution of the multibuyer network follows a similar pattern to the multiseller network until 2015, despite a stronger polarization around Hydra instead of AlphaBay during 2017. However, after the operation Bayonet, although the network shows a decrease in connectivity, it still remains highly connected and with a large number of active multibuyers. Moreover, the network had already fully recovered by 2019 showing a strong resilience against external shocks.
The use of postal and parcel services to transport drugs has expanded rapidly in the past two years, posing added dilemmas for law enforcement agencies. Organised crime groups based in the UK generate more money from selling illegal drugs on the dark web than in any other country in Europe, according to the EU’s drugs agency. Focusing on counterfeits (Fig. 3), we see a similar overall trend (gray line). However, as expected, the overall number of offers is much lower, with counterfeits accounting for around 2.69% of all listings across markets. Interestingly, the observed proportion of counterfeits on dark markets coincides well with the estimated overall proportion of counterfeits worldwide (3.3%) discussed above (OECD/EUIPO, 2019).
- The use of postal and parcel services to transport drugs has expanded rapidly in the past two years, posing added dilemmas for law enforcement agencies.
- Thus, border seizures might miss counterfeits originating from countries suggested by dark markets, such as the US.
- Some offer to send empty packages to new customers, so they can check for signs of inspection.
- The horizontal bars represent each market lifetime, i.e., the time when the market becomes active until its closure, and is colored according to the market’s monthly trading volume in USD.
- The distribution of the shipping origins for all products seems to differ from counterfeits.
The dark web drug market has been a thriving underground economy for years, with illicit drugs changing hands for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. best dark web search engines As we approach 2024, it’s worth taking a look at the trends and predictions for this shadowy corner of the internet.
Lastly, we summarized counterfeit prices for each category (Table 7), estimated vendor sales volumes (Table 8 and Fig. 5), and examined the price differences of products offered on darknet markets and the surface web (Table 9, Fig. 6). By comparing our measures of the types of counterfeits to goods seized at borders, we can identify how products differ and discuss possible contributing factors to those differences. Based on a report by OECD/EUIPO (2019), which summarizes findings regarding seized counterfeits between 2014 and 2016, we see that not all categories represented on dark markets are also present in seized goods (Table 5).
The Rise of Decentralized Marketplaces
One of the biggest trends in the dark web drug market is the rise of decentralized marketplaces. These platforms use peer-to-peer (P2P) technology to connect buyers and sellers directly, without the need for a central authority. This makes them more resilient to law enforcement action and less vulnerable to scams.
Decentralized marketplaces are also more private and secure, as they don’t require users to disclose personal information or trust a third party with their funds. Some popular decentralized marketplaces include OpenBazaar, Particl, and BitcartCC.
The Growing Popularity of Synthetic Drugs
Another trend in the dark web drug market is the growing popularity of synthetic drugs. These are man-made chemicals that mimic the effects of traditional drugs, what are darknet markets but are often more potent and dangerous. Synthetic drugs are easier to produce and distribute than natural drugs, and they can be sold for a higher profit.
Some of the most popular synthetic drugs on the dark web include fentanyl, carfentanil, and flakka. These drugs are highly addictive and can be deadly in even small doses. They are often mixed with other substances, making it difficult for users to know what they are taking and increasing the risk of overdose.
The Threat of Cyberattacks
The dark web drug market is also facing a growing threat from cyberattacks. Hackers are targeting these platforms to steal sensitive information, disrupt operations, and extort money from users. In 2021, for example, the popular dark web marketplace Monopoly was hack
